PREPARATION

1. Turn on the drill and begin cleaning the chimney flue by moving the rotating brush up and down. 2. Start at slower speeds and gradually increase as soot starts to fall. 3. Carefully extend the reach of the brush by adding additional extensions. Ensure the drill is switched off when adding or removing extensions. 4. Never rotate the brush in one spot for too long; always accompany the rotational motion with manual movement up and down to avoid overheating and breaking the extensions.

CHIMNEY CLEANING

1. Lay down a painter’s plastic sheet on the floor to prevent dirt. 2. Use a flashlight and pocket mirror to check the chimney flue’s clearance. If the chimney is covered in shiny black soot, consider hiring a professional chimney sweep. 3. Seal the opening you’ll use to clean the chimney (fireplace front or clean-out door) by attaching a plastic sheet (included in the kit, not to be confused with the painter’s plastic sheet). 4. Never clean a warm chimney; it must be completely cooled. The maximum cleaning speed should not exceed 800 RPM. 5. Make a small cut in the plastic sheet to accommodate the brush head. 6. Attach the brush head to the extension. 7. Attach another extension to further lengthen the brush. 8. Connect the drill adapter to the second extension. 9. Connect the adapter to the electric drill. 10. Insert the brush, along with the extension, into the chimney flue through the cut made in the plastic sheet.

EQUIPMENT CLEANING

1. Use a chimney vacuum cleaner to remove soot that has fallen from the chimney flue (avoid using a household vacuum as soot may clog its filter). 2. Alternatively, use a dustpan and brush to clean fallen soot. 3. Rinse the brush head and extensions with warm, soapy water, then dry them. 4. Store the brush head, extensions, and hex key in a safe place until the next cleaning.

CHIMNEY TOP CLEANING

1. Exercise caution if there’s a chimney cap (hood or rotating cap like a rotary vent) to prevent accidentally pushing it with the brush. If you feel the brush touching the bottom of the cap, slowly retract the equipment. 2. It’s advisable to have someone observe the chimney exterior and alert the cleaner when the brush head reaches the chimney’s top.

TIPS

1. Using a chimney or workshop vacuum is an excellent way to clean soot from the floor near the fireplace or clean-out opening. 2. Ensure the chimney or workshop vacuum has a fine dust filter to prevent soot from being blown back into the living space during cleaning. 3. Trim the cleaning brush fibers with scissors or a sharp knife to fit the brush size to the chimney flue diameter for better cleaning results. The rotating brush’s diameter should be around 1-2 cm larger than the chimney flue’s diameter. 4. To minimize mess, leave the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner close to where soot is falling so it’s sucked directly into the nozzle. 5. After removing the extensions from the chimney, it’s best to clean them with a damp cloth. 6. To loosen the locks on the extensions and brush head, use the provided hex key. Alternatively, use graphite spray or penetrating lubricant spray.
